Maintenance Fees

Most countries, including Canada and the U.S., charge renewal fees during the pendency of the patent application or throughout the life-time of the patent, or both. These fees vary considerably from country to country and may also depend on the status of the patentee or applicant. Budget roughly $500 per country per year for the first few payments, beginning in the second year after the first filing. In most countries, these maintenance fees escalate over the lifetime of the patent or patent application.
