Michael D. Cooper is a partner in the firm. He obtained his law degree in 1996 from the University of British Columbia. He is a member of both the BC and Alberta Bars, and is a registered Canadian patent agent and trademark agent. He has prepared, filed and prosecuted numerous patent applications in areas of technology ranging from steel making, to oilfield tools, to computer implemented business methods. Michael also has extensive experience in other aspects of intellectual property law, including in the transfer and licensing or patents, trademarks and copyright. Michael Cooper is a member of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC) and is a former editor of the IPIC Bulletin. He has been on the Board of the Victoria Bar Association (VBA) for many years and is currently the President of the VBA. He is an adjunct instructor on intellectual property for the University of Victoria Law School’s Business Law Clinic. He is a former clinic captain for Access Justice, an organization providing pro-bono legal services throughout British Columbia. Michael Cooper enjoys spending time with his family as well as outdoor pursuits, including sailing. Prior to his legal career, Michael did extensive offshore sailing, including a three-year trans-Pacific voyage culminating in a 46-day singlehanded passage from Japan to Canada. Michael also enjoys reading, particularly non-fiction, and has had book reviews published in the Edmonton Journal newspaper.
