Expense for filing Registration
Because a trademark application can be based on one or more of a number of grounds, we prepare each application individually to fit the facts. Preparing and filing a relatively simple, straightforward trademark application in Canada for a word trademark, including our fee and the Government filing fee, typically costs about $2,000 and sometimes higher. Complexities can add to the cost. The cost of filing a U.S. application for one class of goods is typically at least a few hundred dollars more than the cost of filing in Canada. In most other countries, the cost typically ranges from about $4,000 to about $6,000 for a single class of goods or services. Government fees in most countries escalate with the number of official classes of goods and services to be covered; in many countries, a separate application must be filed for each class to be covered. A European application covering the member countries of the European Union can usually be filed for a cost not exceeding $7,000 for a single class of goods or services. Complications can often increase the expense somewhat.
Formal drawings are required if the applicant applies for registration of a trademark that includes graphics or appears in a form other than simple capital typewritten letters. Drawing preparation for a Canadian filing usually costs about $200 (in fees and disbursements); in some other countries, an electroblock for official printing of the trademark may have to be prepared at additional expense.
